Hydrocarbon Cracking by PHYWE

Under the influence of energy, such as heat, light, and electrical discharge, all chemical compounds can be broken down into smaller fractions, even down to their elemental components. Typically, the less volatile components of crude oil start to disintegrate at around 400°C. The presence of a catalyst lowers the activation energy of this cracking reaction, allowing decomposition products to form at lower temperatures. Saturated hydrocarbons are then converted into smaller, saturated and unsaturated molecules. Cycloalkanes are dehydrated into aromatic compounds, straight-chain molecules into branched-chain molecules, and branched-chain molecules into cyclic molecules.
