The -402, a prominent member of the numerous X series of medium positional submarines of the '' ('') type, stood out with its enhanced underwater streamlining and increased surface speed. Constructed in Leningrad, it was integrated into the 2nd division of submarines of the Northern Fleet following its transit through the White Sea-Baltic Canal in 1937. During the Great Patriotic War, it undertook 16 combat missions under the command of Captain 3rd Rank N.G. Stolbov and later Captain 3rd Rank A.M. Kautsky. In 1942, it was awarded the Order of the Red Banner, and in 1943, it was granted the status of a Guards submarine. It was lost without a trace during a combat mission, likely having perished on an enemy minefield off the coast of Norway at the end of September 1944.
