This story begins in late Eighteenth-century Great Britain, unfortunately, not so great for the children of that time, exploited by scrupulous men, they are made to work under horrendous conditions. The book tells the story of two such children, brothers Udney and Robbie Marshall, employed to climb up the inside of chimneys to clean them, until a quirk of fate see them become boy soldiers. With the rise of the French Emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte, and his conquests throughout Europe fueling fear of invasion in Great Britain, Udney and Robbie, now men, they are sent south with their Scottish regiment to defend England. They learn there however that their Scottish regiment are to be disbanded, and they now must join an infamous English regiment, a regiment that was responsible for the massacre of colonialists in Boston, Massachusetts, thus drawing first blood in the American war for independence. Believing they were brought south under a false pretence, Udney and Robbie, along with their other comrades from Scotland, they are hesitant to join this regiment, fearing they might lose their Scottish identity.
