Allergic Reactions & Anaphylaxis

What are the symptoms of a mild or moderate allergic reaction?

The most important consideration of recognising a possible reaction should be “Is this normal”?

While facial swelling and hives maybe confronting, along with tingling in the mouth or abdominal pain and possible vomitting from a food reaction, these are allergic reactions. These may not always be present before anaphylaxis occurs.

Anaphylaxis

The following signs and symptoms may indicate a severe allergic reaction or anaphylaxis:

  • Difficulty breathing or talking
  • Swelling of Tongue
  • Tightness in throat
  • Wheeze or Cough
  • Dizziness or collapse
  • Be prepared to start CPR if required!!

Points to remember:

  • Be calm
  • Get patient to ground
  • Administer Adrenaline
  • Form fist around pen and pull off blue safety release
  • Hold leg still & place orange end against outer mid thigh
  • Push down hard until click is heard and hold for 3 sec’s
  • Call 000
  • Talk through with 000 operator
  • Be prepared to do CPR
  • Patient doesn’t move till the ambo’s transfer to their stretcher

Asthma

Asthma is an airway condition that sees a narrowing of smaller spaces of the airway.
Episodes are triggered by events/substances that lead to the changes in the airway.
